Alarming facts about Soil Erosion

Agricultural production has witnessed dramatic rise in the last 3 decades or so in the countries world over. In India, Green Revolution brought about technological breakthrough, which led to the use of short duration high yielding varieties helping intensive use of land in a year, increasing area brought under irrigation and prolific use of chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides. It has been of late recognized that the increasing efforts to raise agricultural growth has cost us dearly in the form of land and water degradation. Large scale ecological losses were reported in crop land, grass land and forest land, such as soil erosion, soil alkalinity and salinity, micronutrient deficiency, water logging and fast depletion and contamination of ground water. Agriculture being the most important occupation of the nation gets ruthlessly affected due to soil erosion.

Soil erosion is second only to population growth as the biggest environmental problem the world faces. Around the world, soil is being swept and washed away 10 to 40 times faster than it is being replenished. it takes nature almost 600 -1000 years to build 2.5 cm of topsoil but this very topsoil can get displaced in a year due to misuse, as a result it is becoming the harmful single factor in the deterioration of productive land.
